    Fifteenth Sunday of Pentecost
    August 24, 2016

    2016-2017 THEME SHIRTS 
    This year’s theme shirts are available in the office for $15. They are heather gray and spun cotton. Join us as we boldly proclaim Christ!

    PTL HOT DOG ROAST
    All families are invited to join us next Friday, August 26th, at 5:30pm for Zion’s Annual Hot Dog Roast.  PTL will provide hot dogs, drinks and tableware.  Please bring 2 simple side dishes to share.  We will gather at the pavilion out back in Dani’s Dreams.  You may bring lawn chairs and blankets for a place to sit.

    PTL VOLUNTEERS:
    The Zion PTL is a great support of the ministry in our school and to our families and congregation. We are currently looking for parents of Zion Lutheran School students to serve on our PTL board and as volunteers to the school. If you are interested, please contact Kristie Sombke through FastDirect. Our first PTL meeting will be Monday August 29th @ 6:30pm

    FREE & REDUCED LUNCH:
    There is still time to apply to the free and reduced lunch program. If you would like to apply there is a form in “Links” on Fast Direct. Please fill out and return to the school office by September 1st. If you have any questions, please contact the school office (861-4210).

    DISCOVER ZION CLASS – Starting on Sunday, September 11th at 9:20am we will begin a class on what it means to be a Christian Lutheran.  This Bible driven class is for those who are seeking membership at Zion and members who just want to get a refresher.  We will meet in the 6th grade classroom.  Call Pastor Jason at 861-5544 or email at    pastorjasontaylor@comcast.net  for more information.

    ADULT BIBLE STUDY:  We will meet Sunday, August 21st at 9:15 a.m. in Conference Room A to discuss “Today’s Light”.  Please join us !

    GRIEF SHARE: Grief Share is a Biblical support group meeting for thirteen weeks which aims at providing people encouragement and support through God’s Word.  If you have experienced the loss of a loved one, please prayerfully consider joining Zion’s Grief Share group.  If you know of someone who would benefit from this ministry, please invite them.  Our first class is Thursday, September 1st from    7-9pm in Conference A.

    HIGH SCHOOL BIBLE STUDY:  “The next High School Bible Study will be Wednesday, September 14th from 6:45-8:00pm here at Zion. Remember, we will meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month!     ATTENTION ALL BLOOD DONORS !  Zion will be holding a blood drive during the Health Fair on  Sunday, September 25, 2016, from 9:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M.  Eligible donors can register online at www.donorpoint.org or contact Arla Sayler at 317-357-2302 or 317-899-4552 to get a time reserved

    Are you a pianist or organist? Looking for a way to serve? Would you like to accompanyhymn/singing during distribution?  Your help would be most welcome!  See Carol Rosenthal in the balcony.

    THE NYG EXPERINCE:   The National Youth Gathering has concluded, but it doesn’t mean the momentum and enthusiasm has to stop! Join us today and we will share our experiences with the congregation. During the Sunday School hour, in the Sanctuary, we will have a presentation of the gathering and we will focus the 10:30am worship service around NYG and what we learned in that experience. We invite you to our Sunday School Class and church service to help us continue to live In Christ Alone. 

    Joy Group:  Upcoming event will be Sept. 1st in Zion’s Large Gathering Area  with a guest speaker from the Heidelburg Haus.   Look for the sign-up sheet for your lunch reservation ($8.00)  Put Joy in the world one smile at a time!

    TUESDAY EVENING WOMENS BIBLE STUDY:  Please join us starting Aug. 23rd at 6:30 p.m. for Bible Study on the movie War Room led by Melissa Amberger.  If you have any questions please call 317-495-8623.

    A BIBLE STUDY ON MARRIAGE ENTITLED: ‘Sacred Marriage’ will resume this Sunday, August 28th. The time will be 5:00pm-6:45pm with dinner and childcare provided. If you attended in the spring there is no cost, but if you will be joining us the first time this time around, the cost is $15/couple or $35/couple if you will need childcare. You may sign up in the gathering area at this   weekend services if you will be attending. The other dates are September 11, 25, and October 9.     GRIEFSHARE BEGINS: Thursday September 1st. 7 -9 p.m. in Pastor’s Conference Room A.  This is our 5th year of offering Grief Share, a ministry of the Evangelism Committee.  If you have, or know anyone who has, lost a loved one recently in the last year or two, or anytime, please come and bring a friend.  This program is for you!  Have your mourning turned to joy.  The 13 week program can be joined anytime while in session if you are not able to come this week. The two hour Thursday night event includes watching a video, with discussion of it.  A workbook is provided for daily time in God’s Word. All members of Zion and our New Palestine, Greenfield, northern Shelby and Eastside Indy neighbors are invited.  FACT #1:  We have ministered in many people, well over 100, and MOST (80% national average) do not attend Zion.  FACT #2:  Some people have come who do not   attend church and are not believing Christians.  Consider this your opportunity to reach out to a friend or co-worker and invite them to come and learn more about God’s  healing Word.  A personal invitation and offer bring your friend to the first night is a great way to begin.  See the Welcome Center for a brochure. Cost: $20.

    Searching for a new ministry opportunity in our congregation?  There will be a cost, you know, but there will also be great rewards.  Stephen Ministry is our congregation’s one-to-one caring ministry.  Right now we’re looking for members who are willing to pay the

    BOLD 

    This year we will focus on being BOLD.  Will you join us as we share the message of Jesus as His bold disciples?  God empowers us to bravely go and tell the world about Jesus.  We, as His children, can fan that flame of faith.  

     

    PARENTS GO BACK TO SCHOOL 

    We welcome parents to school for Back to School Night.  5th-8th grade parents will come back to school on Thursday, August 18.  Parents will learn the details of each classroom and upcoming plans for the school year.

    SUNDAY SCHOOL:

    ViZion Path:

    From 6pm – 9pm Monday to Friday, August 15th – 19th, the church will be open for prayer!  In preparation for ViZion Path, our conversation about Gods Vision for Zion, we are inviting you to pray this week.  Come anytime from 6pm – 9pm, Monday – Friday in the Sanctuary to spend time with God in prayer.  There will be a corporate time of prayer at 7:30pm.  If you can’t make it to the church to pray, please pray wherever and whenever is best for you.  

    We are asking that all of our members spend time listening to God and speaking to Him in prayer as we look to Him for His direction for Zion.  

    Come to our day of discussion on Saturday, August 20th from 8:45am – 2pm here at Zion.  Kurt Bickel will guide us through our dialogue as we look for God to grant us His vision.

    WELCOME BACK FACULTY AND STAFF:
    We are excited to start a new school year.  This week our faculty and staff will gather for training and a retreat as we prepare for our new students and families.  We give thanks to God for the ministry of our school and work of His people.

    CHURCH AND SCHOOL OFFICE HOURS:
    Church & School office hours will now be 8am- 4pm. Please call or stop by with any questions.

    PRESCHOOL MEET & GREET:
    The preschool families will meet with their child’s teacher prior to the start of the school year.  Please call the school office (861-4210) to schedule your time.  The teachers are looking forward to starting a new year and getting to know the children and their families.  

    PRESCHOOL START DATE:
    Preschool students will begin on Monday, August 15.

    SCHOOL STARTING DATES:
    Our elementary students will gather on Wednesday, August 3rd for the first day of the school year.  Students will gather together for worship at 9:00 on Wednesday morning.  Preschool students will begin on Monday, August 15th.  

    OPENING CHAPEL:
    Opening Chapel for the school year will be at 9:00a.m. on Wednesday, August 3rd. Parents and Zion congregation are invited to join us for chapel and celebrate the start of the new school year. Refreshments will be served to parents and guests following opening worship.

    REPORT CARDS:
    Report Cards are available for pick up in the school office.

    ZION SCRIP:
    Going on summer vacation? Help Zion earn money for our school! Get your Zion scrip in the school office. They work just like gift cards. Plan ahead and you can use them for groceries, dining out or gas. The school office has a list of all the gift cards available. Car wash tickets are still available for trips, birthday gifts or just for you!

    ZION GOLF OUTING:
    The Zion Golf Outing will be held Sunday, August 21st at Arrowhead Golf Course with lunch and putting contest starting at noon; teeing off at 1:15. The cost is $80 per player if paid by August 7th. You do not need a foursome to sign up. This year’s proceeds will benefit the building fund. We also need hole sponsors.     YOUTH SUNDAY SCHOOL:
    Classes will resume when school resumes. Thank you to all those who served this year. Please prayerfully consider being a teacher for the upcoming year. We will soon be looking at new material. Permanent and substitute teachers are needed to assist grades Pre-K through High School in their journey of faith. If you have a child these ages, please make attendance a priority so they may grow in Christ! See Michelle Bloomer or Brady Gurganious with questions or to volunteer.

    SACRED MARRIAGE: 
    The bible study for married couples, “Sacred Marriage” will be resuming again in the fall from our spring study. The dates

    VIZION:
    Seeking God’s Plan for Zion: Saturday, August 20th 9am-2pm. Please join us as we seek God’s plan for making disciples in our community and around the world. Lunch will be provided. Kurt Bickel, our facilitator from Cornerstone Consulting, will be leading our time of discussion.

    EVANGELISM CONFERENCE:
    An Evangelism Conference is to be hold at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Avon on September 9th-10th with the theme of “Confessing Christ in a Contrary Culture.” The cost per person will be $45.00 which will include a dinner on Friday night and Lunch on Saturday. After August 26th 2016 registration costs will be $55.00 per person. Registration forms and other information are available in the church office.
